Parenting Inequality Facts

We try to stay gender neutral on this site.  However, it is well recognized that the majority of child custody in the United States is awarded to mothers.  We don not want to suggest that fathers are better than mothers, nor will we except that mothers are better than fathers.  The following facts are provided with their source.  They do not point out that a mother is worse than a father, but the fact that more mothers have custody of their children adds to these statisitics.    These facts were all gathered for this document by a woman.

The facts demonstrate that we need to restore equality to our courts and how both parents are treated by the courts, our laws and their access to their children.

The US dept. of Health and Human services report, Child Maltreatment 2004:

"When 1 parent is acting w/out the involvement of the other parent, mothers are almost 3 times as likely to kill their children as fathers are, and more than twice as likely to mistreat them."

Monthly Vital Statistics Report, May 21, 1991(NCHS1991):

"From 1975-1988, in families w/ children, women filed for divorce in 2/3 of the cases each year."

In a study published by the American Journal of Orthopsychiatry:

"40% of divorced mothers admitted to interfering with their X's access or visitation and that their motives were punitive in nature and NOT due to safety concerns."

According to the American Psychological Association's Journal of Family Psychology:

"Children in shared custody settings have fewer behavior and emotional problems, higher self esteem, better family relations and better school performance than children in other arrangements."
